Gold vs. Silver - A Beginner's Guide by Gen Wright
Investing in gold and silver has increased in popularity in recent years. This is due to the high profile of the national debt and the increasing lack of confidence in the U.S. dollar. It seems that every time you turn on your television or listen to the radio you hear an advertisement for gold. Is gold, however, the best way to invest for someone who is new to precious metals? The other popular and more sensible option for a beginning investor is purchasing silver.
It's amazing that vendors selling coins and bullion don't spend more time advertising silver. Most people viewing their ads are middle class and don't have the means to spend $1400.00 on one gold coin. Nor should they be expected to. With silver, new investors have the ability to purchase several different varieties of coins, bullion, and bars. For the price of one gold coin, a person could buy a roll of Silver American Eagles, some Morgan Silver Dollars, and spend the rest on the numerous amount of silver art bars there are available.
Don't get me wrong, gold has its advantages too. The first thing is that owning gold carries a certain amount of prestige that doesn't come with silver. Over the course of history, Kings and Emperors have measured their wealth and power by the amount of gold they could accumulate. If you are looking to invest thousands of dollars in precious metals, owning gold makes more sense than silver because you can't buy as much of it. This makes gold much easier to store. Gold doesn't tarnish the way silver does. It is important to keep silver in plastic, and even then it must be polished at some point. My take on that, however, is that the same person that doesn't take care of their silver, is the same person that is bound to lose their one gold coin. That's why it is important to get a safety deposit box.
Buying silver is more than just an investment, it can also be fun. If you visit online vendors like Ebay or Amazon, you would be amazed by the amount of different silver items there are available. From coins to bars, and silverware to belt buckles, you can end up with a collection of silver that would not only be worth good money, but would impress your friends too.
Gold and silver can both be used as money, but what would be the most practical choice for barter in case of a national emergency? Can you imagine going to the local farm and buying bread and eggs with gold? Before 1965, U.S. currency namely, nickels, dimes, quarters, and half dollars were made with silver. As a matter of fact, one of the most popular ways to invest in silver is to buy a bag of these early date coins. This way, if the unthinkable does happen, and the dollar collapses, you have a sensible means of currency.
No matter which one you chose, owning gold or silver is the perfect way to supplement your investment portfolio and protect yourself from a weakening dollar.
