The first gold coin standard was introduced by the United States government, and the American eagle coin is the base unit for the coin system in the country since as early as 18th century to 1933 when it was first introduced. At those time, only four standard monetary units in the United States namely the dime, the cent, the dollar and the eagle.

While the dime was worth 10 cents, the dollar was worth 10 dimes and the eagle was valued as 10 dollars. The eagle itself had its variations like the gold quarter worth 2.50 dollars, the gold half eagle with 5 dollars value, the standard gold eagle with 10 dollars value and the topper the gold double eagle valuing 20 dollars.The American eagle coins have been in the use as early as the 18th century only that they were available gold quarter eagle’s back then which carried on manufacturing till around 1929. The half eagles also date back to the 18th century and they were also manufactured till as late as 1929 and the eagles were under use from the 18th century to 1933.The size of American eagle coins started from 17mm for the quarter eagles to 34mm for the gold double eagles among which the most abundantly use was the standard 10-dollar valued gold eagle measuring 27mm in diameter.

In the modern standard system, the modern eagles started circulating from the year 1982 onwards and were called the commemorative eagle coins. These coins were for the purpose of Olympics in 1984 and for the 2003 Wright Brothers First Flight at the Kitty Hawk.The United States government also provides coins for collectors which are known as Bullion coins. The proof coins are treated to a very special and organized minting process. First the coins are fitted manually burnished blank coins into the pressed fitted with dies for the purpose. After this the coin is struck several times with soft impression so as to give it a detailed image of the engraving.

The process follows evaluation of the coins by inspectors who wear white gloves to prevent any damage to the craftsmanship of the coins. These coins are only meant for collection purpose and are thus sold at very high value, custom packaged with the official certificated issued from the government with the guarantee of purity from the government since it is produced by the mint itself.
