Are You At Risk For An Asbestos Related Disease? by Wendy Moyer

Over the years evidence has shown that exposure to asbestos is linked to life threatening diseases such as malignant mesothelioma and asbestosis. When someone is diagnosed with an asbestos related disease they are pretty much being told that there's a very good chance that they will die within the next year and a half.

We all have been exposed to asbestos at some point in our lives. There are low levels of asbestos in the air, soil, and water all around us. However, even though it is possible to become ill from low level exposure, the majority of people who do become ill from asbestos were usually exposed to it on a regular basis.

Although studies indicate that there isn't any safe level of asbestos exposure, asbestos related diseases most often happen when people worked directly with asbestos or are subject to substantial contact to it.

Millions of American workers have been subject to asbestos exposure since the early 1940s. Health hazards related to asbestos particles and fibers have been recognized in employees who were exposed to this mineral in asbestos while being employed in the milling and mining of asbestos, the shipbuilding trades, the construction industry, while doing insulation work, in the manufacture of asbestos textiles, and other trades. In addition, drywall removers, demolition workers, asbestos removal workers, automobile workers, and firefighters are frequently exposed to asbestos particles.

Another group of people who are currently at risk of developing asbestos related diseases are those who were involved in the rescue, cleanup, and recovery at the site of the New York City World Trade Center (WTC) attacks on September 11, 2001.

Asbestos had been used in the construction of the North Tower of the World Trade Center. When the WTC was attacked literally hundreds of tons of asbestos were released into the air.

The people who have the greatest risk are the police officers, firefighters, construction workers, paramedics, and volunteers who were in the area around Ground Zero. In addition people who lived closed to the World Trade Center and those who attended nearby schools are at risk.

A study has found that close to 70% of the World Trade Center rescue and recovery workers suffered worsened or new respiratory symptoms while they worked at the WTC site. The lung function tests of approximately 28% of the people who were tested were abnormal, and 61% of those tested who did not have any previous health problems have developed respiratory symptoms. However, it is possible that these symptoms could be related to materials other than asbestos.

Although asbestos is still being used in many products in the United States, government regulations have caused work practices to be improved. Today's workers are less likely to face asbestos exposure risks than those in the past.

For the most part, people who develop an asbestos related disease do not show any signs of the illness for ten- to forty-years or more after their exposure.

If their company knowingly put them at risk to asbestos related diseases many people have initiated lawsuits directed at the people who caused their illnesses.
