ARE men in the UK now ready to carry bags?

Yes, thinks David Gledhill director of Blokesbags, a company set up to sell a range of men's bags on the web.

"Attitudes are finally changing," said David "Look at the average High Street and the best dressed of the men are carrying bag. They have to because they want to have all their gadgets with them"

"Those who still insist on filling their pockets look more like Michelin Man on a bad day. They spend a fortune on clothes and then proceed to ruin them by putting bulges in places the designers never intended."

Men's Health recently asked the question, what do you carry in your man bag?' in an online forum and answers varied from umbrellas, books, wallets, glasses, PDA, ipod, keys, pens, sunglasses, aftershave and lunch.

"But, what is also clear," said David, "is that many men who don't admit to having a bag, actually carry around a backpack or a laptop bag and they put everything they need in there.

"And then there are the traditionalists who carry a briefcase or a small holdall. But what are those if they are not man bags? They are bags carried by men and therefore.."

David recognized the problem for himself during eleven years as a daily newspaper editor: "I used to spend a fortune on suits only to unpick the pockets at the first opportunity and then proceed to fill them.

"Designer tailored suits are not meant to look like that, but I didn't want to leave my toys at home where they were of no use whatsoever. There is no point in buying gadgets unless you get to use them."

In a recent piece in The Guardian, journalist Simon Chilvers discovered when talking to just four men who carry bags the range of contents covered key rings, books, ipods, phones, coins, unopened post, cheque books, sunglasses, nurofen, umbrellas and a bottle opener.

An insurance company, LV General Insurance last year claimed that almost two thirds of British Men regularly carry man bags with contents valued at an average of 319 - that was 64 more than the average woman.
