Is a Walking Liberty U.S. silver dollar minted 1985 or later not a true dollar?
Is it illegal to use it in a transaction at its face value, rather than its market value? I've seen web sits that describe the $1 denomination on the coin as "artificial" -- Does that mean such a coin is not real U.S. money?
Actually if it is a 1986 or later Silver Eagle $1 coin it is considered legal tender and could be used at your convenience store or MacDonalds. However, case law exists showing that you could only expect to spend it as a $1 coin, not receive market value (in other words the value of the silver content of the coin) in a transaction.
If your expectation is to receive market value based on current silver prices take it to a coin dealer or sell it at auction. Based on current values (today being 7/10/2008) the coin's melt value is about $18.
The Silver Eagle $1 silver dollar was authorized by Congress and signed into law by President Regan in 1985 and first released by the Mint in November 1986, so it is lawful minted legal tender...however, spending it at face value would be losing money.
