Does anybody know of a web site that will gave you the value of old and rare coins without...?
...jumping thru hoops?
I need like a catalog that you can look up different coins and access their value. All the sites I have come across are asking you to register with them and I DON'T want to do that!! HELP, PLEASE!!
When dealing with old coins, there are basically two things to look at. What is the value based on the TYPE of coin (i.e, what is a Wheat Backed cent worth if it is just a common date), and what dates are worth MORE than a common date. A good site to determine this is http://coins.ha.com/info/typevalues.php
They show some base values depending upon type (and they show you how to tell what type your coin is). they also give you the dates of coins that are worth substantially more than Type Value. Once you know if your coins are rare or just type value, you will know weather or not it is worth getting your coin professionally graded and Slabbed. A coin that is professionally graded and slabbed is put in a sealed plastic with a professional evaluation attached. You will then be better able to sell the coin on Ebay or some place like that. The best coin grader is PCGS. Their coins receive the highest price for a grade (their EF40 is worth more than an ANACS EF40).
http://www.bestcoin.com/ has a set of links on the left part of the page that goes through the major types and each link will show you the values based on grade. The key is getting an accurate grade for your coins (a Buffalo Nickel from 1913, type 1 is worth about $325 in Mint State 66, $1200 in Mint State 67, and $22,500 in Mint State 68). Most lay people could not tell the difference between a 66 and a 68. Given this, the best you can hope to do on your own is decide if it is worth $40 per coin to get a coin professionally graded. You can decide that based on the type and date information. Some types are always worth it, some are not. Some are only worth it if it is the right date and mint.
